A diode is an electronic component made of semiconductor materials like silicon, selenium, germanium, etc. It consists of a PN junction, two pins and a package.

According to junction area, diode can be divided into point contact type and surface contact type.

And according to material, Diode can be divided into silicon diodes and germanium diodes. The PN junction allowable temperature of germanium tube is lower than silicon tube.

Diode packaging has metal packaging, glass packaging and plastic packaging.

The PN junction is a space charge region formed at the junction of a P-type semiconductor and an N-type semiconductor. The PN junction has unidirectional conductivity. Therefore, the biggest feature of the diode is unidirectional conduction. When the forward voltage is applied to the anode and cathode of the diode, the diode conducts. When a reverse voltage is applied to the anode and cathode, the diode is turned off. Therefore, the turning on and off of the diode is equivalent to the turning on and off of the switch.

Diode is one of the earliest semiconductor devices, and its application is very wide, especially in various electronic circuits. Diodes, resistors, capacitors, inductors and other electronic components are connected reasonably to form circuits with different functions, which can realize AC rectification, detection of modulated signals, limiting and clamping, and regulation of power supply voltage. Whether it is in household appliances or industrial control circuits, you can find the trace of the diodes.
